What is the Right Path Riding Academy? We are an organization
created to help those with special needs enjoy the benefits of Therapeutic
Horseback Riding and Cart Driving.
Our Mission...
To help special needs children achieve their highest potential -- physically,
emotionally, and cognitively -- through the unique avenue of therapeutic
horseback riding, cart driving, and other equine-assisted activities.
The Right Path Riding Academy is a 501(c)3 organization located on a cattle
ranch south of Drumright, Oklahoma and was founded in 1996 by Leslie Kirkland,
a registered physical therapist. Leslie’s unique perspective as a healthcare
professional and as a person living with Multiple Sclerosis provides passionate
leadership to the program’s volunteers and riders.
Why Therapeutic Riding Works...
Therapeutic riding is much more than giving a kid a ride on a horse. It is a
proven form of therapy that produces physical, cognitive, social, and
educational benefits. Why does this happen? The three dimensional
swinging gait of the horse closely matches the human gait therefore providing
the rider with a rich sense of unimpaired mobility. The side to side movement of
the horse constantly displaces the rider's center of gravity. These movements
of the horse benefit the rider's balance, strength, posture and mobility. The
horse is also a motivator; children with cognitive disabilities, speech impairments
and learning disorders often concentrate harder and produce better results in an
effort to please the horse.
